What’s good, everyone? Joshua Evo’s here with your Pokemon Fantastique entry for today. Sorry for the lack of intro but it’s been a pretty hectic week and weekend so I’m just gonna get right into it.
I chose today’s Pokemon based partially off of Megan’s mention of Pokemon the Movie but it’s obviously not Mew, Mewtwo or any of the main characters. This one was granted featured status by yours truly, pretty much because when it made its first appearance, it confused the holy hell out of EVERYONE in the theatre.
Charmander, Pikachu, Squirtle, Bulbasa… WHAT THE HELL IS THAT THING?!
I’ll admit, I went to the theatrical release of the Pokemon movie because I was so into the various phases of the source material. The opening battle scene is a pretty epic one, albeit a little predictable since everyone had seen Ash’s line-up before. Until his opponent chucked THIS thing at him. Donphan (as we later came to know it) immediately got my attention with its crazy bowling-ball type attack and the simple fact that it was just something that anyone had seen before at that point. Not only was Donphan an unexpected treat but it also signaled that the original Pokedex of 151 Pokemon were getting some additions, possibly in the form of a new game? I dunno about you guys but back then, it made me all drooly. Then again, the last thing I was expecting was the Pokedex to swell to 600+ creatures several years later. Apart from that, Donphan is also a pretty useful little beast in the video game but it was definitely that explosive and surprising first appearance that got my attention.
